Midas is a spatial installation that borrows its name from the mythological king Midas who grew ears of a donkey and hid it with a hat. His barber knew and couldn’t tell, so he dug a hole in the ground and whispered his secret in the hole. Grass grew over the hole, and whenever the wind blew his secret traveled with the wind.
This experiment captures the voices of people in the space and transforms them into wind energy by running fans behind the transparent membranes. the fan speed is relative to the loudness of the voices.
This experiment plays on people’s drive to play and experiment with interactive systems, thus attempting to speak loudly, and their social intimidation that prohibits them from speaking loudly in front of strangers.
